Subject: Back-lighted cross
section of T.rivale seed
Submitter: John
Gyer
Discussion: I've just done a
series of sections and dissection of T.rivale seed. As this section
shows the suctorial cotyledon has rolled edges that when they come
above ground will unroll into the leaf-like cotyledon that has been
discussed occasionally on the list.

Subject: Side lighted cross
section Trillium rivale seed
Submitter: John
Gyer
Discussion: This is a side lighted
T.rivale that clearly shows the rolled edges on the suctorial cotyledon.
When the cotyledon emerges, these edges will unroll and expand to
give the leaf-like appearance reported for the first photosynthetic
organ of this species.

Subject: Trillium
rivale cotyledon
Submitter: John
Gyer
Discussion: This is the last
photo of the series. The edges of the cotyledon are clearly rolled
for most of its length. The round object at the apical end is an
air bubble.
