Research:
PROPAGATION: NATURAL OFFSET PRODUCTION (05RP_09)

Study Plan: A study of Trillium offset production in native habitats in North Alabama.
-Cuneatum (Madison and Hughes) clumps.
-Pusillum var. alabamicum clumps

-Stamineum offsets

-Flexipes Offsets

Study Findings: (In Process).
-The only North Alabama Species I have found to produce offsets in nature in N.Al. vigorously (perhaps over 50 percent (from above ground observations)) is T. pusillum var alabamicum. T. stamineum produces offsets ocasionally(less than 10 percent). T. flexipes produces very few offsets(approx. 1 percent). T. cuneatum almost never produces offsets. I have only seen 2 exceptions and they(Madison and Hughes) each had a very large number of offsets(30+ each).

-T. flexipes and Cuneatum data from actual rhizome inspections of rescued rhizomes from Timbered lands in North Alabama. T. stamineum and pusillum data from sample clump inspections verified by above ground clump inspections to provide basis to extrapolate conclusions.

-These initial results may not be true in other areas where conditions are different. You are encouraged to comment or submit your observations. They are certainly different from my observations in garden situations.

Scientific Name: Trillium Cuneatum (Hughes)
Common Name(s): Sweet Betsey, Large Toadshade, Whipporwill.
Location: Eastern USA
Description: Picture is 1 of 2 large natural cuneatum clumps that I have seen. Cuneatum does not usually produce off sets in North Alabama. Other pictures natural T. flexipes offsets in North Alabama where they usually produce very few offsets(0-2 per 100 rhizomes).
